The sacred practice of plant medicine has thrived on these Hawaiian islands for over a thousand years. Here at Starseed Ranch, we're honored to continue this tradition through our medicinal plant gardens, where we cultivate healing herbs that have served communities across the Pacific and beyond. Walking through our 26-acre regenerative farm, guests often ask about the various healing plants they encounter - from the grounding 'awa growing near our streams and food forests, to the adaptogenic ashwagandha flourishing in our tropical polyculture gardens.
Traditional Hawaiian healing, known as La'au Lapa'au, teaches us that plants are our kupuna (ancestors), holding wisdom that can support our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. This ancient practice recognizes that healing happens not just through consuming plants, but through relationship - understanding where they grow, how they're prepared, and approaching them with proper respect and gratitude. At Starseed Ranch, we grow quite a few powerful healing plants that visitors can learn about during our farm tours and wellness retreats.
Ashwagandha, often called the "Indian Ginseng," has adapted beautifully to our Hawaiian volcanic soil and helps our bodies manage stress while supporting energy and vitality. Gotu Kola (also known as pennywort) thrives in our moist, shaded areas and has been traditionally used to support mental clarity and nervous system health. The sacred 'Awa (kava kava) grows along our stream banks and in our polyfields and holds deep cultural significance in Hawaiian (and Polynesian) tradition as a plant for ceremony, relaxation, and community building. Tulsi, or Holy Basil, flourishes in our herb gardens and serves as a daily tonic tea that supports respiratory health and emotional balance.
