Sacred land, regenerative off-grid living, and authentic eco-hospitality in North Kohala

Aloha from
Dash & Erika

For nearly two decades, we have been blessed to call North Kohala home. These sacred lands at the northernmost tip of Hawai'i Island are where we've raised our three children, built our lives, and devoted ourselves to regenerative agriculture and education through our nonprofit, the Hawai'i Institute of Pacific Agriculture.

Our work here extends beyond farming—it's about cultivating connection. We empower island youth through food systems & agricultural education, train the next generation of regenerative farmers, and strengthen community resilience through land-based learning. From keiki to aspiring young farmers, we share what this land teaches us: that tending the land and nourishing our communities are inseparable.

Starseed Ranch carries a profound legacy of sustainability and intentional living. To steward these 26 acres—abundant with tropical food forests, healing herb gardens, native species, and rare plants—is both a Kuleana (responsibility) and a privilege we hold with deep reverence. This land is woven into our story: we were married here in 2011 beneath the bamboo and palm canopy, returning year after year to learn from the previous stewards, Andre and Jyoti Ulrych, who entrusted us with their vision. Their dream became ours, and now it is our honor to share this sacred space with those seeking transformation, healing, and a return to living in rhythm with Mother Nature.

Every guest who arrives becomes part of this land's legacy. We welcome you, and are honored that you chose Starseed Ranch.

Mahalo piha,

The History of Starseed ranch

Original Vision (1990’s)

Starseed Ranch was originally built by famous musician Kenny Loggins as a Y2K safe haven and personal estate for his family. The 26-acre ranch was initially designed to be completely off-grid, run primarily by one of the only privately powered micro hydro-electric generator systems on the Big Island. The unique architecture was created to blend into the landscape while providing modern comforts, utilizing many natural resources and materials from the land.

The Ulrych Era (2003-2020)

Andre and Jyoti Ulrych purchased the estate in 2003 with a vision of building a world-renowned place of learning and healing. They formed a foundation to carry on their legacy at Starseed Ranch, developing:

  • Sustainable agriculture systems
  • Educational retreat programs
  • Healing arts workshops
  • Cultural preservation initiatives
  • Community gathering spaces

Current Stewardship (2020-Present)

Dash and Erika Kuhr, along with their three children, now steward this sacred land, continuing the vision of education, healing, and sustainability while adding their own focus on regenerative agriculture and youth empowerment through HIP Agriculture.

The Land & Location

Sacred Geography
  • Niuli'i Ahupua'a: Located in a traditional Hawaiian land division that extends from mountain to sea
  • Elevation: 500 feet above sea level with mountain and ocean views
  • Water: Streams run through both sides of the property, providing natural energy and irrigation
  • Climate: Mild tropical weather with 60+ inches of annual rainfall supporting lush vegetation
Unique Features
  • Off-Grid Systems: 100% solar-powered and rainfall catchment systems make us energy independent
  • Balinese Architecture: Custom buildings using reclaimed hardwoods, bamboo, and traditional materials straight from the land
  • Covered Walkways: 'Ōhi'a beam-supported pathways connecting all major buildings
  • Diverse Ecosystems: From tropical food forests to medicinal plant gardens to fruittree orchards
Cultural Significance
  • The Kohala Mountains are considered sacred in Native Hawaiian culture. Our property sits within lands that have been cultivated for over 1,000 years, first by Native Polynesian & Hawaiian families and now by us, as humbled stewards. We honor this legacy through:
    • Traditional Hawaiian agricultural practices
    • Native plant & tree restoration
    • Cultural education programs
    • Respectful tourism that benefits the local community
